What the press said...

Assessments of the Festival by the Press in Barbados

“Senator Murray commended the Organising Committee and the Faculty of Humanities and Education for being daring and enterprising enough to stage the Festival” ... “He said the series of films to be shown would help open our eyes and imagination to the fact that there are, and can be even more, films which reflect the roots of our cultural norms and portray our view of ourselves and the world”.

What the filmmakers said...

"It was wonderful cinema days in your Barbados. I wish your Festival will grow well and become one of the places for 'African and Caribbean cinema forum' ... and the audience was great. Hope to land another day at Bridgetown again."

Balufu Bakupa-Kanyinda, Democratic Republic of Congo

What the students said...

Assessments of the Festival by students of Postcolonial Film at the Cave Hill Campus

“I came away from the Film Festival feeling inspired that filmmaking can be accessible and that it is not limited to Americans with huge budgets. I felt that the people who came to the Film Festival should have left with a much more informed and expansive idea of filmmaking and the film industry, hopefully leaving behind any preconceived beliefs that Hollywood images are the only ones found on the screen” ... “It was very refreshing hearing individuals who loved what they do and were so committed to it despite encountering financial hardships”.

Carl Fraley

“The anti-First Cinema films shown at the Festival not only disrupt our expectations, but leave us with a curiosity that we may never find answers for; much in the same way a person would look at an autistic child and wonder what s/he is thinking.” ... “Postcolonial films are deliberately different. But that’s cool, difference is good” ... “I really did find the different personalities of the six film directors refreshing” ... “I thought the directors showed a genuine interest concerning the audience’s reaction to the films”.

Sherrie-ann Worrell

“I found the opportunities to talk with the directors and to attend their workshops to be very educational and exciting” ... “I felt privileged to be able to meet people who had dedicated their lives, not only to something they loved, but to creating art that could make a difference in the way that people saw the world”.

Kennon Scott

“The Festival of African and Caribbean Film was a great success, since it brought together the works of seven filmmakers, all championing their unique styles and techniques. Personally, I have learnt much from the screening of the various films and interviews that followed”.

Gregory Glasgow

“Overall I felt that the Festival provided an intimate setting to meet and interact with film directors. The fact that turnout was so good showed the film festival’s appeal to the public of Barbados”.

Todd Dickey
