Who
are the Filmmakers?
Five diverse
talents from different parts of the Caribbean, and three from
Africa:
Felix
De Rooy (Curacao), director of Almacita
di Desolato and Ava and
Gabriel; Andrew
Millington (Barbados/USA), director of Guttaperc;
and two highly original young videographers, Juan
Carlos Zaldivar (Cuba/USA), with his ‘notebook of a return to
his native land’, Ninety Miles;
and Yao
Ramesar (Trinidad), poetic auteur of multiple documentary shorts
on aspects of Trinidad culture.
From Africa, Newton
Aduaka (Nigeria/UK) comes with a critical response to the
diasporic experience, Rage; while Balufu
Bakupa-Kanyinda (Congo) presents his up-to-the-minute 2002
documentary Afro@Digital
- a fascinating insight into the way mobile phones, the Internet and
digital technology are revolutionizing African societies - and
The Draughtsmen Clash, a razor-sharp satire of
Mobutu. Imunga Ivanga's (Gabon/France; not
attending) acclaimed feature on contemporary youth culture in a West
African city, Dôlè, and
Raoul Peck's (Haiti, not attending) masterful
biopic of Congolese independence leader Lumumba
are also showing."
